The AquiSense team is excited to be working with ASEI Uganda, a social enterprise in Uganda with a mission to promote capacity for innovation in Africa through science and technology particularly in the areas of renewable energy, water, and education. ASEI is integrating AquiSense’s PearlAqua™ product based on UV-C technology into the design of solar powered point of use water purification systems to improve safe water access and better lives in Uganda. The design and the UV-C technology has initially been installed at healthcare centers and schools in off-grid settings.

The facilities in need of UV disinfection had either no water treatment infrastructure or small ceramic filters which provided low treatment rates at 5 liters per hour. The only other option for clean water to these facilities was to buy pre-packaged clean water, which comes at a high cost for their region.

UV-C LED installation in Uganda

Adding UV-C LED

Currently, ASEI has installed several water purification units while integrating UV-C LED technology based on AquiSense’s PearlAqua Micro™ disinfection product. Technology and design deployments were made at Hapuuyo Health Center III and Kyegegwa Hospital in Kyegegwa District, Western Uganda. The use of pre-filters and UV-C LEDs provide more people with clean water with a much higher rate compared to the ceramic filters previously used. One advantage that the team at ASEI was excited about was the ability to have decentralized water treatment, as many small towns require clean water, and the use of UV-C LEDs offer off-grid disinfection due to the ability to work on micro or small solar power systems.

“AquiSense Technologies is a proven manufacturer and leader in UV-C manufacturing serving a global market. Their ability to use semiconductor technology to enhance UV water treatment creates many possibilities of delivering safe drinking water to many people in Uganda”. – Alicwamu Moses – Engineer & Programs Director at ASEI

ASEI has already begun the process of expanding their water treatment projects to schools and healthcare centers throughout Uganda. Beyond this application, ASEI is looking to create water refill stations for general use, delivering safe drinking water at subsidized costs. They will also extend the UV-C applications locally to food and beverage SMEs in Uganda.

“ASEI is working with AquiSense to integrate the UV-C technology into new solutions that improve people’s lives, and quality of living. This is just the beginning of the so many possibilities for ASEI and AquiSense in Uganda and Africa.”, Moses added.

The AquiSense team is honored to be awarded the UV Engineering Project of the Year by the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA). This award celebrates our work on the Mitsubishi Electric project which uses our UV LED technology to treat a residential greywater recycling process.

The project uses UV-C LED technology for disinfection of recirculating greywater within Mitsubishi’s EcoCute heat-pump hot water supply system.

“The goal was to integrated UV-C technology for its strong bactericidal inactivation capabilities, while not compromising any of the existing EcoCyte operating parameters, such as flow rate, temperature, environmental rating and service intervals,” said Mitch Hansen, marketing manager at AquiSense Technologies.

Adding UV-C LED

In Japan, with a high population density and most city dwellers living in apartments, the greywater reuse market covers hundreds of thousands of units annually.

With costs for water treatment, transport and heating significant, hot water is considered a precious resource. As a result, it is more economical to heat water during low energy-demand times and it is common for households to reuse bath water to conserve resources.

Mitsubishi’s recirculating heat-pump system historically included filtration but lacked disinfection technology to prevent bacteria growth. After evaluating many UV-C LED and UV systems, the company selected AquiSense as a partner to work in collaboration.

The companies designed and tested a custom variation of AquiSense’s golf-ball-sized PearlAqua Micro module as a component for Mitsubishi’s EcoCute.

Critical for research into disinfection wavelengths

AquiSense Technologies, the global leader in UV-C LED disinfection technology, is excited to partner with NS Nanotech on the development of the first solid-state broadband UV research device.

The device will be powered by the world’s first UV lamp that is solid-state and emits wavelengths from 200 nm to 400 nm, developed by NS Nanotech.

This device is critical for today’s important research into key disinfection wavelengths such as, 220nm (Far UV-C), 254-280nm (UV-C) and 290-400nm (UV-A and -B).

The collaboration between AquiSense Technologies and NS Nanotech will offer researchers reliable, low footprint tools, as part of AquiSense’s PearlLab Beam™ product line; one device to test all wavelengths within the full UV spectrum and another focused on the 220nm, or Far UV region.

Reliable research tools

“This partnership signifies a shift in how we can research spectral impacts of UV on various mediums and organic material,” said Oliver Lawal, CEO of AquiSense.

“Due to the early stages of Far UV-C, much more research is needed on its effects as a disinfectant, we wanted to provide that research tool so we can more effectively expand into consumer markets if Far UV-C is found to be unequivocally safe. Expect this product to be ready to purchase in the coming year,” concluded Lawal.

“It is great to be working with leaders in the solid-state disinfection industry,” said Victor Hsia, VP of Sales and Business Development at NS Nanotech.

“We believe our technology will revolutionise how we disinfect our world and we’re excited to get this technology into the hands of researchers to quantify the safety and effectiveness of this breakthrough.”

High-level microbial disinfection in water reuse

AquiSense Technologies, the global leader in UV-C LED water disinfection technology, is proud to announce a unique version of its PearlAqua Micro product specifically for Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO).

The partnership provides MELCO with AquiSense’s patented ultraviolet light emitting diode (UV-C LED) water treatment technology for MELCO’s residential “Eco Cute” hot-water systems.

MELCO spent over two years evaluating UV-C LED technology solutions from over a dozen suppliers for its market leading CO2 heat-pump hot water supply system, selecting UV-C LED based on its low energy consumption, long service life and small footprint.

AquiSense was selected as the long-term supplier based on leading product performance, high-volume manufacturing capability and competitive pricing. The new component from AquiSense, based on its market leading PearlAqua Micro platform, offers a high-level microbial disinfection barrier in hot water reuse.

Unlike competing units, where pathogens remain throughout the water recycling process, the new UV LED disinfection acts as a barrier preventing contamination from future cycles.

World’s largest UV-C LED contract to date

Mitsubishi is a global conglomerate with product solutions on every continent and is known for their quality, sustainability, and innovation in a broad range of markets and applications. This agreement shows MELCO, a key subsidiary of Mitsubishi, have made a deep forward-looking commitment to deploy mercury-free UV-C LED technology in its products for decades to come, providing AquiSense substantial production growth for an extended period.

“This partnership signifies a huge adaptation of UV-C LED technology in the residential market. Not only is this the world’s largest UV-C LED supply contract to date, it is likely larger than all previous contracts combined,” said Jun Miyauchi, AquiSense Asian Regional Sales Director.

Oliver Lawal, CEO of AquiSense, added: “We are excited about this new partnership with MELCO. It represents a lot of hard work by our whole team globally and with production already underway. This again reinforces our position that UV-C LED technology offers unique benefits that expand the application use of chemical-free disinfection.”
